Green Cards for travelling to the EU after 31 December 2020

The UK formally left the European Union earlier this year and we have been in a transition period since the end of January.

It is not yet known if a Free Trade Agreement will be in place when the Transition Period ends on 31 December 2020.

Where no agreement has been reached, from 1 January 2021, if you will be driving in the European Economic Area, including Andorra, Serbia and/or Switzerland, you will need to take a paper copy of your Green Card with you – this provides hardcopy evidence that your vehicle is insured whilst abroad. (note electronic Green Cards are not acceptable).

You will need to notify your broker or insurer in good time of your intention to drive in Europe as, at present, insurers are advising that it could take up to 4 weeks for a green card to be issued! Hopefully that timescale will improve as insurers adapt to the new requirement.
Please note if:

  • your insurance policy renews during your trip abroad you will need to carry a Green Card for the current insurance and another for the renewed period.
  • you are towing a trailer or a caravan you will need two Green Cards, one for your vehicle and one for your trailer or caravan.
  • you make changes to your vehicle or if you change address you will need to apply for a new Green Card.
